I like symmetrical houses better than non-symmetrical ones . . . at least, the front of the house. I don't think I care about the insides, at least with regards to symmetry or lack thereof.

My car's clutch is dying. *sniff*

(hi, late)

Normally the orchestra doesn't get a standing O; it's just the soloist. I mean, I spent my childhood seeing the Toledo Symphony (whatever, it was my only option) and I think the only time that the orchestra itself got a standing O was when they did an AMAZING (relatively speaking) job on Brahms 1 (which is, um, also really popular).

But yes, you were spoiled. :-P

This totally read as a "I know what I'm doing" kind of post--by which I mean, if I hadn't already known that you were a top-notch musician, this would have given it away.

I think everyone has a tendency to do this; to critique extra-hard those things which they know so well. When I go to see theater shows, I end up slightly disappointed by bad stagehands or actors' heads peeking out from behind prosceniums.

Anyway, sounds like it was a wonderful show despite its shortcomings and it makes me want to go to the Symphony!

I'm oscillating between "Please don't die!" and "That would be the awesomest, creepiest blog post ever!"

Still, I'm leaning toward the former.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I did have a lot of enjoyment at the symphony. Stefan's Beethoven was beautiful. I really, really enjoyed that greatly. It was a piece I hadn't heard in a long time, but one that is very much loved.

And, no, this will not dissuade me from going to the Symphony. ... Though, it's becoming increasingly clear that I have been spoiled with Symphonies my whole life: growing up with the Atlanta Symphony, and then going to college in Cleveland, which is just divine. ... Also, it's always hard when you're used to being so self-critical about this music, that you hear all the tiny mistakes.

Your post had almost no "la la la" in it. I was hoping you had a great time so I'm sad to read that there was so disappointment for you.

I haven't been to the Meyerhoff in years, and the last time I went for something orchestral was in the 90's, but if memory serves it was some Vivaldi performed by the BSO with Nigel Kennedy guesting. It was pretty badass. I always found the hall a beautiful venue to visit, too. Anyway, I hope this doesn't dissuade you from future impromptu nights out at Symphonies!

Oh, then I'm not helpful at all. Unless... there's always my standby suggestion of: puppies! er... clean puppies?

Interesting. See for me, I want my desktop to be somewhat of a getaway from the rest of my life. So, I'm not so interested in having something to do with music, viola, dancing, Bobby, etc. Those are things that surround so much of me anyway, I know what they mean to me, I don't want to be so absorbed in them that I get sick.

So, I think something to balance those out is what I'm looking for. Something that's clean, a bit non-committal, but still inspires me.
